Ryan Heather, P.E., of ELEN Consulting, Inc., in San Diego, tackled the challenge of replacing an aging boiler at the Hill Canyon Wastewater Treatment Plant (HCTP) in Camarillo, CA. The new 2 million BTUH boiler needed to meet Ventura County APCD’s stringent Low NOx emission requirements while using digester gas as its primary fuel and natural gas as a backup. Compounding the complexity, the digester gas pressure at the facility was approximately 7” W.C., while the Low NOx Power Flame Burner specified for the project required at least 14” W.C. for reliable operation.
